Como curar tu mate de calabaza?

Curing a mate gourd is an essential process to prepare it before its first use. This procedure helps to seal the pores of the gourd and eliminates any pulp residue that could alter the flavor of the yerba mate. Here are the steps to cure a mate gourd:

1. Wash the mate
Wash the inside of the mate with warm water to remove any residue or dust.

2. Fill the mate with yerba
Fill the mate cup approximately three-quarters full with used or new yerba mate.

3. Add warm water
Fill the mate with warm (not boiling) water until the yerba is completely covered. Allow the yerba to absorb the water and swell.

4. Let it rest
Let the mate rest for 6 to 12 hours. This process helps the yerba absorb the pulp residue and seal the pores of the mate.

5. Empty and scrape
After 12 hours, empty the contents of the mate. Using a spoon, gently scrape the inside of the mate to remove any loose pulp.

6. Repeat the process
Repeat steps 2 to 5 two or three more times, always using new yerba.

7. Dry the mate
Once the curing process is complete, allow the gourd to dry completely in a cool, dry place. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight or heat sources, as this could crack the gourd.

After these steps, your gourd mate will be ready to use. Remember that it is important to maintain good hygiene and care of the mate to prolong its useful life and ensure a good experience when drinking mate.
