There are several types of yerba mate that differ mainly by their production process, the mixture of leaves, stems and powder, and their flavor characteristics. Here are some of the most common types:
1. Traditional yerba mate (with a stick)
This is the most common and popular variety. It contains crushed yerba mate leaves along with stems and sometimes powder. It has a characteristic, robust and balanced flavour.
2. Yerba mate without stem (despallada)
In this variety, the stems are removed during the production process. This can result in a smoother and less bitter taste compared to yerba mate with stick.
3. Mild yerba mate (mild)
It is a variety that is characterized by having a lower content of dust and stems, which makes it smoother and less bitter compared to traditional varieties.
4. Yerba mate with herbs (composed or flavored)
This variety of yerba mate is mixed with additional herbs such as mint, boldo, pennyroyal, among others. These mixtures can add additional flavors and aromas to the yerba mate infusion.
5. Organic yerba mate
It is grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, following certified organic farming practices.
6. Packaged yerba mate (in sachets or bags)
It comes in individual bags or sachets like tea, which makes it easy to prepare and consume.
Each type of yerba mate can have different flavor nuances and characteristics, so the choice will depend on personal preferences and the preferred preparation method (with a straw and traditional mate or in individual tea bags).
